Dry Cleaning vs. Home Wash: What to Do and When?
While a care label will clearly communicate how you need to clean your new blouse or any other piece of new clothing, the chances are that it might not be completely accurate.
Manufacturers are overly cautious with instructions, but the truth is that your casual wear t-shirt doesn’t need dry cleaning—even if the label says so.
If you’re currently looking at a piece of clothing and are unsure about the best, most economical way to clean it, we're here to help out.
Cotton and Linen
It’s best to wash these materials on a gentle machine setting in a mesh bag. Make sure that you’re using a mild detergent and cold water to prevent any unnecessary damage to their texture. After washing, don’t leave them in a basket; instead, immediately hang them outside—away from the sun—for drying.
Wool and Silk
Since these materials are delicate and soft, machine washing them may cause wear and tear. Hand wash them using a mild detergent in cold water. Since these garments can’t be put in a dryer either, use towels to wring any excess water out and let them air dry.
When to Dry Clean?
There are a few types of garments and fabrics that you should only take to the dry cleaner. These include fur, suede, velvet and taffeta, etc. Here are five general rules of thumb that usually indicate a need for dry cleaning:
· The item is heavily embellished and may suffer snags during machine wash
· Stained clothing that needs thorough degreasing
· Detailing of clothing makes it difficult to hand or machine wash
· Items that are difficult to wash at home such as bedding, duvets, rugs etc.
· Suede and leather garments
· Expensive gowns, dresses and suits that may be at risk of damage if home washed
· Garments that easily shrink in the water
· Difficult to iron garments that can get wrinkled after home wash
